Metabolic Diseases

Researchers at MRC Harwell have had a long-term interest in type II diabetes and obesity and have contributed to our understanding of these conditions through investigation of the roles played by various genes associated with human disease and characterisation of both genetic and diet-induced mouse models.

A range of in vivo and ex vivo tests to profile metabolic changes

We have a range of sophisticated equipment for measuring metabolic states both in unchallenged mice and in cohorts under dietary control.

This equipment allows us to determine the metabolic activity of a mouse through measurement of a number of factors. For more information, please visit the Metabolic Phenotyping section of the In Vivo Phenotyping page.

We offer a wide range of clinical chemistry tests suitable for plasma, serum, and urine samples for ex vivo characterisation of metabolic diseases. Our staff are trained in efficient blood-sampling for mice housed with us and can also provide guidelines for sample collection, processing, and shipment, if you would just like to send us samples that you collect yourself. For more information, please visit the Clinical Chemistry page.

If you are looking to generate a new genetic mouse model of obesity or diabetes, we can support you with this process, whether your project requires simple deletions or point mutations or generation of more complex alleles.
